TAKE CARE OF DEVELOPMENT, DEFENCE WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF OR WE SHOULD GIVE OUR EQUAL ATTENTION ON BOTH!
"The circumstances that endanger the safety of nations are infinite, and for this reason no constitutional shackles can wisely be imposed on the power to which the care of it is committed."-------Alexander Hamilton.
The city of yesteryear ---is now a concrete jungle where there is nothing but lawlessness. The crime rate is intensifying. Terrorism, cast related violence, communal riots, left wing extremism and insurgency in northeast have shattered our country.
Modernization and industrialization are no doubt dazzling. But they can't be achieved at tearing apart the social fiber of the society. Is safety of people subservient to progress? Do we achieve progress at the cost of peace and safety?
It seems very strange and ambiguous that preparedness for war is essential for preserving tranquility. A week nation becomes prey to the whims and assaults of powerful neighbors. If a country is well-equipped with all the modern war gadgets and weapons, other nations will think twice before attacking. A nation can progress only if there is peace. As said, "Power is always right, weakness always wrong. Power is always insolvent and despotic."
There is an example of two superpowers America and Russia where preparedness for war sprinkled peace. Each of the two yearns to expand its political and economic influence. They are afraid of each other because each of the two is fully prepared to meet the onslaught of the other. Preparedness of these countries for war has brightened the chance of peace in the world.
Though we have the third largest army in the world we still are governed by fear of attack. Can anyone answer why? This is because in the area of military capabilities, India's conventional capabilities are no match for those of the major powers. Progress can be done only when people work liberally and not under fear. As said, "Fear is the proof of a degenerate mind."
I know our country needs good roads, better transport, more telecommunication linkages, better and sufficient power supply and planned urbanization. But what about that our country already has? Shall we allow it to go rack and ruin? After every terrorist attack, the government announces packages for economic development of affected areas. But if we already have strong defence, the money that is used for reconstruction and compensation can be utilized for the prosperity of the nation.
There is no question that we need both a peaceful periphery and a supportive external environment if we yearn to turn a country over a new leaf. The peace can only be achieved when we are ready for war. In words of George Washington, "If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it; if we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known that we are at all times ready for war." The ill will of neighboring powers can be resisted only if the nation is prepared and powerful. No nation would dare to play any dirty trick on a well-equipped country and hence there will be no destruction. After its defeat, in 1971 Pakistan will not try to pinprick India because it has visualized that India is prepared to repel any aggression.
Open gang war, extortions, kidnappings, cyber crimes and piracy are the daily local news that are enough to saturate the atmosphere with fear and prevent the people to put their best foot forward. If the defence is strong, no evil mind can hamper the progress and hence peace can continue for a longer period to bring home the bacon as economy can flourish without thorns. In word of Nelson Mandela, "Peace is the greatest weapon for development that any person can have."
Though the economies of different countries are linked i.e., loss to one will bring recession in other countries too but when the yearn to become no. 1 and the feelings of jealousy and hatred can urge different countries to become enemies, nobody knows! As said by George Meredith, "It is ego-ego, the fountain cry, origin, sole source of war."
To the ones who preach global brotherhood. I have a question. How many more sacrifices are to be made? How many more families are to be ruined? Do you have any answer? 'No'. The policy that rules in the present scenario is 'Tit for Tat'. You haven't heard Sahrukh khan in chak De India---"Wo ek maare, tum do maro."
Gause's Competitive Exclusion Principle' states that two closely related species for same resources can't co-exist indefinitely and the competitively inferior one will be eliminated eventually, survival of the fittest is the law of nature. Hence, a nation can survive only if there is strength in its defence.
For the effective spread of governance, the rule of law and economic and human development national security is must. In some situations, the military plays a vital role in disarming and demobilising combatants, training police forces or enabling the delivery of humanitarian aid. The example is the the Indian army which played an important role in saving the lives of lakhs of pilgrims who suffered due to flood in Uttarakhand.
The end of the cold war has left USA with a experience: "A great nation with worldwide strategic, political and economic relations cannot avoid situations in which challenges to its interests require the application of Force." A strong and ready military capability has proven essential for providing national leadership a wide range of options for supporting national objectives.
India needs to develop a politically, diplomatically and operationally sustainable response to cross-border terrorism and internal riots. It needs to balance multiple consideration, such as protecting its citizens from violent attacks, promoting secularism domestically, preserving international goodwill and uplifting the human life index of average people residing in the country. Within these parameters, the order of priorities must be understood ---the safety of Indian nationals comes first.
The moment India thinks of developing something its faces the tough reality that India being home to various religions and ideologies experiences internal threats to national security. Controlling communal violence and maintaining societal harmony is a must for any democratic country for sustaining economic growth rate at a respectable level. We need a defence against corruption, child labour and all the other misdemeanor practices.
Piracy, smuggling and spreading of fake currency notes lead to huge financial losses and hinder the development of India deeply. India cannot become a developed nation till it strengthens its defence. It will always be found by the web of compensations and will not be able to progress further. To fight terror, the country needs to strengthen its security. The need of our is to revamp border security, maritime security and aerial security so that we can develop. Calvin Coolidge said, "Our country represents nothing but peaceful intentions towards all the earth but it ought not to fail to maintain such a military force as comports with the dignity and security of great people."
What is the use of development if we are not secure, our country undergo disintegration and we have to live under the rule of someone else with fear all around? The famous blind poet Nguyen Dinh Chieu bemoaned ---------
"I would rather face eternal darkness
Than see the face of traitors
I would rather see no man
Than encounter one man's suffering
I would rather see nothing
Than witness the the dismembering of the country in decline."
I wish there were some balance between progress and humanity. I wish people realize and visualize ’development as security’.
Development can be done only when there is peace and peace and stability can be maintained by being prepared for war. Leaving you with a question ------Do you want the rule of Britishers or any other foreign invasion again? The answer will prove my motto!!
