Gulliver's Travel Chapter 2
Q1. Gulliver is a prisoner of the Lilliputians. It is two days since he has answered nature's call. He is feeling very distressed and uncomfortable. Do you think it is a genuine problem? How does he solve it?
Ans:- Gulliver, being prisoner of the Lilliputians, is feeling very distressed and uncomfortable because he has not answered the nature's call since two days. But when the necessities of nature beat him he then creeped into his house and shut gate after him and went as far as the length of his chain could suffer and discharged his body of that uneasy load.
I think, it is a genuine problem whose solution is necessary for everyone.
Q2. Why does Gulliver dwell so long on the way he unburdens himself? Why does he feel guilty? Do you think he is justified in feeling and behaving the way he does?
Ans:-As we know, language was the barrier between Gulliver and Lilliputians. That is why he was unable to make the Lilliputians understand about his burdens. Yet, he kept waiting for any such arrangement made by the king of Lilliput. But it went two days and Gulliver did not see any sign of such thing under process then he went ahead and unburdened himself.
He feels guilty because he had never done so uncleanly  an action in his life.
I think so, he is justified in feeling and behaving the way he does. As we know that he was confined in a room and that too with a chain tied in his leg. Then what could he do in place of the things he did.
Q3. The surrounding all around Gulliver's place of incarceration is full of natural beauty. Do you agree? Describe it in your own words.
Ans:-Yes, I am agree that the surroundings all around Gulliver's place of incarceration is full of natural beauty. The country all around appeared like a continued garden and the enclosed fields, which were generally forty feet square, resembled so many beds of flowers. And these fields were intermingled with woods of half a stang, and the tallest trees which appeared to be seven feet high. Totally it was looking like a painted scene of a city in a theatre.
Q4. Gulliver's bulk and extraordinary diet pose a problem for the people of Lilliput and Gulliver. How is it solved?
Ans:- Gulliver's bulk and extraordinary diet pose a problem for the people of Lilliput. Due to this, the court was under many difficulties concerning Gulliver. Some alternatives that came come before court are:-
Sometimes they determine to starve him and sometimes they at least wanted to shoot him in the face and hands with poisoned arrows, which would soon dispatch him. But again they considered, that the stench of so large a carcass might produce a plague in the metropolis and probably spread through the whole kingdom.
But some good behaviours of Gulliver make so favourable an impression in the breast if His Majesty and the whole board, that an imperial commission was issued out, obliging all the villagers, nine hundred yards round the city, to deliver in every morning six beeves, forty sheep and other victuals for his sustenance, together with proportionable quantity of bread and wine and other liquors.
Q5. Language is a problem between the people of Lilliput and Gulliver. How is it solved?
Ans:- Language is a problem between the people of Lilliput and Gulliver but it has been solved soon. Six of his Majesty's greatest scholars are employed to instruct him in their language and in about three weeks he makes a great progress in learning their language. He begins already to converse together in some sort and the first words he learns were to express his desire  "that he would please give him his liberty".
Q6. Describe in detail the circumstances that led to Gulliver being searched and the manner in which all inventory is made of all the articles?
Ans:- His court Majesty think for probably that Gulliver might carry about several weapons which must needs be dangerous things, if they answered the bulk of so prodigious a man. And this was the circumstances that lead to Gulliver being searched.
An inventory of all the articles is made very accurately by Lilliputians' officers who were put on works for the same. They made a list of articles and from where they found them and how did they do so.
The Lilliputian term 'Imprimis' means in the right pocket of the mountain man, they found only one great piece of coarse-clothe, large enough to be a foot-cloth. In the left pocket they found a huge silver chest, with a cover of the same metal, which they, the searchers, were not able to lift. They, then, desired, it should be opened and one of them stepped into it. As soon as they entered into it, the dust like substances whereof flying upto their faces made him sneeze for several times together. In the right waistcoat - pocket they found a prodigious bundle of white thin substances (paper), folded one over another, about the bigness of three men, tied with a strong cable, and marked with black figures; which they conceive to be writings. In left pocket, there was a sort of  engine(comb) from the back of which were extended twenty long poles. In the large pocket on the right side of his middle cover, they saw a hollow pillar of iron about the length of a man, fastened to strong piece of timber larger than the pillar and upon on side of the pillar, were huge pieces of iron sticking out, cut into strange figure, which they know not what to make of it (it was actually a pistol). In the left pocket, another engine of the same kind. In the smaller pocket on the right side, were several round flat pieces of white and red metal, were so large and heavy, that the searchers could hardly lift them. In the left pocket were two black pillars irregularly shaped(it was razor). The two pockets in which they couldn't enter were the fobs of mountain man and out of the right fob hang a great silver chain, with a wonderful kind of engine at the bottom(it was oracle). After having searched all the pockets of Gulliver the officers observed a girdle(belt) about his waist made of the hide of some prodigious animal, from which, on the left side hang a sword of the length of five men.
Q7. Describe the hospitality of the Lilliputians towards Gulliver.
Ans:- The hospitality of the Lilliputians towards Gulliver is praise worthy. In spite of being tiny creatures as compared to Gulliver they arranged victuals and liquor for him. With a great effort and giving a mature sign of engineering, they make a bed for him and also stitch several short bed sheets to create a big one. By employing many tailors, they make his clothes after Lilliputian fashion. The king employed several scholars to teach him their language and what not they do for him!
Q8. Why was Gulliver all objects of great curiosity in the Lilliputians' capital?
Ans:- Gulliver all objects was of great curiosity in the Lilliputians' capital because the Lilliputians had seen such objects before. They were still using bows and arrows, sword, spikes etc for fighting. When they saw these modern engines, they were unable to believe on their eyes. Their reactions and curiosity were natural.
Q9. Describe the reaction of the Emperor of Lilliput on seeing Gulliver in 100 words.
Ans:- It was an extraordinary sight for the emperor of Lilliput. He comes to see Gulliver on his well trained horse which was supposed, had been trained for such a situation but his beast too reared up on its hinder feet. The king who was an excellent horseman, kept his seat. The king surveyed him well great admiration; but kept beyond the length of his chain. He ordered his cooks and butlers, who were already prepared, to give him victuals and drink, which they pushed forward in sort of vehicle upon wheels. The king was astonished by seeing how Gulliver emptied all the victuals and drinks at once. It was completely unbelievable sight for him.
                    INTERPRETING THE CHARACTERS
Q1. After reading this chapter, what is your opinion of Gulliver's adventure (so far) in Lilliput?
Ans:- As of my opinion after going through the chapter, Gulliver avoids to take risk instead he respects the commands of the king and shows his clemency and gentleness to earn the people's trust that could bear a fruitful outcome. He helps the Lilliputians' searchers to search his body and also hands over all his possessions that might be dangerous for Lilliputians. He shows his cooperation in learning their language. He is always seen acting according to rules and regulations of Lilliput. So, In this chapter no adventure by Gulliver is seen.
Q2. Describe the Emperor of Lilliput and the special attributes he possesses which set him apart from the common folk.
Ans:- As described by Gulliver, the emperor is taller by almost the breath of Gulliver's nail, than any of his court. His features are strong and masculine, with an Austrian lip and arched nose, his complexion olive, his countenance erect, his body and limbs well proportioned, all his emotions was graceful and his manners were majestic. He was twenty-eight years and three quarters old. His dress was very plain and simple, and the fashion of it was between the Asiatic and the European; he had on his head a light helmet of gold, adorned with jewels, and a plume on the crest. He held his sword drawn in his hand to defend himself. The sword was almost three inches long; the hilt and scabbard were gold enriched with diamonds. His voice was shrill but very clear and articulate.
These were some special attributes he possesses which set him apart from common folk.
Q3. The description of each little detail and the narration of the story so far bring out a clear picture of what is happening. It is likely something humorous and full of contrasts and fun. Do you agree? If yes , then give examples to prove it.
Ans:- Yes, I am agree with what the question said. It is likely something humorous and full of contrasts and fun. You can consider the moment when Gulliver is being searched by Lilliputians' officers. How the author has explained every story in detail and in a humorous manner. Just go through mentioned texts below: How is it  explained by the author -
